
The General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) course is a six-month residential program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Government of India). Upon successful completion, candidates become eligible to join Indian or foreign shipping companies as part of the deck or engine crew. With additional sea service and qualifications, they can advance to roles such as Motorman, Oilman, Fitter, Deck Serang, Able-Bodied Seamen, or Bosun. Further progression to officer-level positions is possible upon meeting specific service and qualification requirements and passing the requisite examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
This course commences twice a year, in January and July, and is strictly residential.
Admission Process
Entry Requirements
1. Educational Qualification:
- Candidates must have passed the 10th Standard from a recognized educational board, with Science and Mathematics as subjects.
- A minimum of 40% aggregate marks is required, with at least 40% in English individually.
- Relaxation for Lakshadweep Natives: For candidates from Minicoy Island, belonging to the Scheduled Tribe in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, the minimum educational qualification is relaxed to 8th Standard passed.
2. Age Limit:
- Candidates must be between 17.5 and 25 years at the start of the course.
- For diploma or degree holders, the upper age limit is extended to 27 years.
Panel Interview & Online Test
Eligible candidates will be invited for an online interview and must complete an online test as part of the selection process.
Medical Examination
- Shortlisted candidates are required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination conducted by a DGS-approved doctor.
- The examination may also be conducted by the in-house DGS-approved doctor at BSSM.
Pre-Sea Training
Selected candidates will undertake the 6-month DGS-approved General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) course, which is mandatory before embarking on a seafaring career.
