Diploma in Nautical Science

The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a 1-year pre-sea training program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) and affiliated with the Indian Maritime University (IMU). Upon successful completion, cadets receive a Pre-Sea Completion Certificate and qualify to join a ship as Deck Cadets.

The DNS course consists of:

  • Two semesters of on-campus training (6 months each).

  • Upon completing the course, cadets undertake an 18-month Structured Shipboard Training Programme (SSTP) comprising: Three onboard training semesters (III, IV, and V) of approximately six months each.

During onboard training, cadets receive a stipend, free boarding, and lodging.

Admission Process

Entry Requirements

Candidates must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

1. 10+2 Qualification:

- Passed 10+2 from a recognized Board/University with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM).

- Achieved a minimum of 70% marks in PCM and 65% aggregate.

- Equivalent qualifications such as GCE-UK "A" level or International Baccalaureate Diploma are also accepted.

2. B.Sc Qualification:

- Completed B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Electronics with Physics as an individual subject in at least one year.

- Achieved an average of 65% in the final year.

- Candidates must also have passed 10+2 with PCM with a minimum of 65% marks.

3. B.E./B.Tech Qualification:

- Completed a B.E./B.Tech degree from IIT or an institute recognized by AICTE/UGC with an average of 65% in the final year.

- Candidates must also have passed 10+2 with PCM with a minimum of 65% marks.

Age Limit: The maximum age limit is 25 years at the time of course commencement.

Panel Interview and Online Test

Shortlisted candidates will be called for the admission procedure, including an interview.

Medical Examination

- Selected candidates must undergo a stringent medical examination conducted by a DGS-approved doctor.

- Alternatively, the examination can be conducted by the in-house DGS-approved doctor at BSSM.

IMU Common Entrance Test (CET):

Candidates must qualify for the IMU CET for the respective batch. Details regarding the application process, dates, and venues for the entrance test are published on the Indian Maritime University website.
